Bonfire Night - Pet Do's and Don'ts

After hearing that a staggering 45% of all pets feel fear on Bonfire Night, we’ve made it our duty to ensure that you’re doing everything you can to put them at ease before the celebrations commence!

Take five minutes to look at our Pet Do’s and Don’ts on Fireworks Night to give your pup or kitten the safety and security that they both need and deserve.

DO:

1. Discover a safe place for your pet to seek shelter when the fireworks begin; why not try popping extra sheets in their usual bed, or making a safe haven behind the sofa which you can join them in.

2. Shut all the windows and curtains to make sure that any light that’s emitted from the fireworks is minimalised.

3. Try and block out the noise by playing music indoors; it’s actually been proven that classical music promotes calm behaviour, so maybe try some Einaudi!

4. Just in case your pet makes a break for it, ensure that you’ve had them micro chipped and that they are wearing some form of identification.

5. Feed your pet a high-carb mean prior to the celebrations commencing; this way they are more likely to fall asleep early as the meal will make them feel drowsy.

DON’T:

1. Don’t over comfort as your pet will sense that something is wrong and will act up in a plea for further attention which will reinforce any anxieties that your pet already has.

2. Don’t get irritated with your pet when it undoubtedly becomes worried; they’re more likely to act up if you start to show signs of annoyance.

3. Never force your pet to face the fear of the noise – they don’t have any control over their feelings and won’t just get over it!

4. Under no circumstances should you be walking your pet off the lead on Bonfire Night, or over the weekend; it makes it easier for them to run off should there be an unexpected noise from a firework.

5. If your pet has found a secure hiding place, but is still whimpering, don’t try and lure them out as this will cause more unnecessary stress.
